Overview

Tip payouts across Square were manual and often delayed, creating extra work for sellers and slower access to earnings for employees.

We introduced automated daily tip payouts via Cash App within Square Payroll.

My role

  • Led 0→1 end-to-end design across seller and employee journeys

The challenge

Delivering daily tip payouts required solving two system constraints.

Sellers have different payout schedules and different tax needs made automation complex.

  • Manual end-of-shift reconciliation didn’t scale across payout models.

  • Cash and spreadsheet tracking increased compliance and reporting risk.

  • Payout timing varied, creating inconsistency and reconciliation risk.

Staff had high friction in Cash App linking and had no control over their pay cadence.

  • Account linking required extra steps and lacked clear guidance.

  • Same-day vs next-day timing expectations weren’t transparent.

  • Employees lacked control over how often they received their tips.

Turning tip payouts into a flexible, reliable system for sellers

I designed a configurable payout schedules with preview states to support different operational models.

To balance automation with flexibility, we introduced a configurable payout workflow. This mechanism allowed sellers to:

  • Select payout timing (same-day or next-day)

  • Preview settlement logic before activation

  • Switch between automatic and manual distribution

  • Understand when funds would move

Delivered a contextual activation framework

Daily payouts depended on linking Cash App. Instead of relying on settings, we embedded activation at high-intent moments like clock-out.

  • Reduced friction with streamlined authentication

  • Confirmed connection in real time
